The word anime is the Japanese term for a specific type of animation produced in Japan.

There are nine anime categories, also called types:

Kodomo – this type of anime is aimed at children, both boys and girls. It has an educational goal, for example, to teach the children certain social skills.

Hentai – this is porn in animated form with on-screen sex, often in unrealistic and unnatural ways.

Harem – in this type of anime a male character is surrounded by female characters who are in love with him.

Reverse harem – this type of anime is the opposite of the harem. A female character is surrounded by males who are in love with her.

Gundam – this type of anime include all animation series about giant fighting robots.

There are twelve Anime themes.

A story or series produced from the categories above may contain one or more themes. This means that, for example, when a story in the Kodomo category is produced, the theme may be romantic, humorous or in the form of a drama. It will still contain the characteristics of Kodomo, which is to be educational and aimed at children. Note that the words topics and genres’ are used interchangeably to refer to anime themes.

Action – the main elements of an action story are an abundance of fighting, high-speed car chases, fierce battles and impressive explosions.

A popular example is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. This story is about two brothers that were abandoned by their alchemist father and raised by their mother. After their mother had died, they attempted to bring her back to life by performing a forbidden human transmutation. Their failure caused them to lose their bodies. They then trained as alchemists and went on a quest to discover the nature of the fabled Philosopher’s Stone. During this time they learned of a government conspiracy to hide the true nature of this stone. 

Another example of an action anime is Attack on Titan. In this story, set in the future, giants tried to exterminate humans. A few humans survived by hiding in a city with extremely high walls. When these walls are destroyed by a colossal titan, a teenage boy and his foster sister witness something horrific and vows to take revenge. 

Comedy – these animes are meant to be funny and make you laugh.

An example is the much-loved story of Gintama. Aliens have taken over Japan and all samurais have been disarmed of their swords and had to do general work. A young samurai has been trying to make a few bucks by doing all types of odd jobs, while clinging on to the lost art of how to handle a sword. Despite their good intentions, he and his gang get in trouble everywhere they go.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou (Everyday life with monster girls.) Imagine monster girls who want to
date human boys. This becomes possible through the “Cultural Exchange Between Species Act”. A boy volunteers to be part of this program and had to deal with the raging hormones and heat season of these eager monster girls. A crazy, raunchy story unfolds. 

Mecha – this type of anime is about robots in battle. There are two types of robots – the super-sized implausible robots, known as super robots; and real robots, those that are governed by realistic physics.

Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic story about Cybernetics that allow people to replace their weak body parts with stronger ones, and the dying gets a new life. A team of cyborgs must investigate corruption and terrorism. A major, who had full-body prosthetics, and her second in command are assigned an important task, but soon discovered that everything is more complicated than they expected. 

In Eureka Seven a young boy dreams of joining the mercenary but is forced by his grandfather to become a mechanic. An unknown object crashes into their garage and changes everything. Events resulting from this caused the boy to eventually join the mercenary. 

Lolicon – this type of anime involves the portraying of young girls in a provocative way, such as being dressed in sexy and revealing clothes.

A popular lolicon anime is Angel Beats. This story is about a high school for teenagers who died but can have a second chance at life if they can come to terms with problems and challenges they experienced while alive. A boy who lost his memories meets a girl, and they join the Afterlife Battlefront. There they get to know Angel, a girl with supernatural powers who fights against the SSS. 

In Haganai, an odd girl and equally odd boy decided to create the Neighbours Club for people with a lack of social skills and friends, like themselves. Each of the rest of the club members is weird in their own, unique way. Together they encounter many adventures in their quest to make friends and attend social activities. 

Supernatural – this theme refers to a fantasy environment with characters that have strange and unrealistic powers and abilities.

An example of a supernatural anime is No Game No Life. In this story, a brother and sister get involved with an online gamer who invited them to play a game of chess. They soon found themselves in an otherworldly realm where they meet the God of Games. In this world, all types of worldly conflict are settled by playing games. 

Elfen Lied tells the story of a special breed of girl born with short horns and telekinetic hands. The government founds her and performs all kinds of experiments on her. She manages to escape, but in the process she had sustained a head injury that left her with a split personality. Two kind college students find her and take her in, not realising who and what she is and how they will be drawn into a world of government conspiracy. 

Slice of life – this theme is usually about a specific happening at a specific time in the ordinary life of a person. It doesn’t contain much progress or character development. The story covers a short time in the life of the person.

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai is an example of this theme and tells the story of two girls who are best friends. Kirino is the ideal hardworking student who works as a model to earn some money. Her best friend, Ayase, hates lies but doesn’t know that she is about to discover that Kirino has a deep secret that will soon be revealed. Kirino’s brother discovered an erotic game that belongs to her and he gets drawn into a web of lies.

Great Teacher Onizuka is a story about a reformed biker gang leader. His new mission in life is to become a great teacher so that he can impress sexy high school girls. Not impressed with his methods of teaching, the class of ruthless students try their best to chase him away in any way they can. 

Moe – this theme refers to the feeling of affection for youthful and innocent females and their behaviour, like the characters in some anime stories. Drama – this theme refers to a story with intricate storylines and theatrical happenings; usually the kind that makes you cry. A popular and well-known drama anime is Mirai Nikki (Future Diary). With the help of a future diary, a few chosen ones can see what is going to happen in the future. The holder of a diary has the responsibility to use it to survive and to become the new god of space and time. It has all the elements of a good drama and will keep you at the end of your seat the whole time.

Another example of an anime drama is Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (Erased). Satoru is a boy with the power to return to his past. This power is only activated for a few seconds or minutes during the critical life-and-death moments of a person. When his mother is murdered, and he is a suspect, he activates his power to take him 18 years into the past to solve this mystery.

War – this theme has to do with the conflict between two or more parties. It can be here on earth or in some galaxy or underworld and always involve fighting armies, explosions and loss of lives.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is a war-themed anime about space colonisation where each colony received their own government. There is a battle about who owns the colonies and who owns space, which led to a war with all the classic features of intrigue, political murder and child soldiers on suicide missions.

In Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha, a Hell Gate opens and distorts the stars. This opened certain powers to brutal humans known as Contractors. These Contractors exchanged their humanity for super powers. One contractor, known as the Black Reaper, undertake missions for a mysterious Syndicate. At the same time, he is busy with a plot that threatens the existence of the Contractors.
