The game Touhou Project is a Japanese Bullet Hell shooter video game series developed by ZUN. ZUN is the only member of the Japanese game development team, Team Shanghai Alice. The game’s music and video was completely and independently developed by ZUN from Team Shanghai Alice. The game plot is very interesting and revolves around the activities in Gensokyo, a fictional realm where humans and supernatural beings co-exist. Gensokyo was sealed off from the rest of the world by a magical barrier and is now protected by the main protagonist in the series. Reimu Hakurei, the main protagonist protects the realm from antagonistic supernatural beings. Reimu’s main job as Shrine Maiden is to manage the border and ensure the safety of the realm is maintained at all costs.
At first the games were produced to run solely on the NEC PC-9801, a Japanese computer system. However, this was later changed to make the game compatible for use on Windows based systems. This change placed the game in the hands of a broader group of patrons and fans. A few spin-off games that diverged from the original game theme was also produced in later years. The series holds the record for the most prolific fan based series in the famous Guiness Book Of World Records. As an extension to the main series the game has spawned the creation of a media franchise encompassing novels, manga and commercial fan books.

Reimu is the game series’s main protagonist and is the Shrine Protector of the Gensokyo realm. Marisa Kirisame
Marisa is a human who resides in the forrest of magic. Her main abilities are the use of magic. When it comes to her temperament, she is the opposite of Reimu. Marissa is considered to be somewhat selfish and disagreeable. She does not get along well with the other characters featured in the game series. Her demeanour when talking to others reminds one of a somewhat tomboyish disposition and she has been mistaken for a man before. Marissa is obsessed with collecting various articles which she stores in her house. She is also known for borrowing items from other people and not returning them as promised. Her cluttered house is located in the forrest of magic. Marissa is in actual fact a hardworking and honest person. It is strange that she would be Reimu’s friend since Reimu doesn’t like hard work very much. Marissa’s magical abilities are classified as highly destructive and characterised by stars and lasers. Marissa is also featured in all the Tohou Project games and some other materials related to the game series.
Sakuya Izayoi Anime Dakimakura Pillow
Sakuya is also a human character in the game. Although she has almost enough magical abilities to manipulate time, her power level is not considered to be as strong as that of Reimu or Marissa. Sakuya has the ability to stop or manipulate time and alter the flow of time. She might also be able to tinker with space as it is very closely related to time. She is also an avid knife thrower and can conjure knives out of thin air due to her ability to manipulate time. Sakuya is the head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She once threw a great many knives at another inhabitant of the mansion because he was unable to keep unwanted guests out of the mansion. As a result of this behaviour, other characters often make jokes about Sakuya and this incident.

Remilla is the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and she is a vampire by nature. Known as the Scarlet Devil when she is feeding on the blood of other characters, she is a very powerful character. Remilia is able to manipulate fate and is almost 500 years old. Despite her title Remilia is actually a kind person and gets along very well with the many employees of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Not fond of fighting, she uses red bullets and knives as weapon of choice when needed. Remilia gets along well with Reimu, who tolerates her in return. First appearing in the embodiment of the Scarlet Devil, Rumia is a level 1 boss in the game. She has the power to manipulate darkness and regularly uses this power to surround herself with a cloud of darkness. It has been said that she doesn’t like the sunlight or summer heat. Cirno
The main protagonist in fairy wars, she is also know as the ice fairy. Her first appearance was on the second stage of the embodiment of the Scarlet Devil. She is very strong for a fairy, her strength being comparable to that of similar yukei. Cirno belongs to the yukei species. Cirno is considered to be a bit weak when compared to the other inhabitants of Gensokyo and her personality is a bit childish. She is not well liked by all the other characters and some of them even consider her to be a bit stupid. She feels that she is a bit superior to some of the other fairies in Gensokyo.
Louise
Louise is a demon and came to Gensokyo from the Makai. At first she refused to go to Gensokyo, but later she decided that she liked being among the humans. Louise is considered to be a very polite demon.
Letty Whiterock
Letty Whiterock is a seasonal youkei with the power of manipulating cold. She is not kind to humans and is known to have frozen quite a few humans after happening upon them. She is not able to create cold weather, but she can amplify existing cold conditions. She uses this as a method to lower her opponents fighting spirit and make them react slowly and sluggish. She hates sunlight and warmth and stays away from any source of heat.
Youmo is a half phantom, half human creature who resides Hakugyokurou. By profession she is a gardener and fencing instructor. Since the seventh game is the series, she has become a regular playable character and is featured in all the games following Perfect Cherry Blossom. By gathering the “spring” of Gensokyo, she caused a never ending winter season in the realm. Being described as easily manipulated by others she has a calm and diligent personality. She is always portrayed in a dark green and white dress with silver hair. Her ghostly counterpart is represented as a pale white figure similar in size to her human self.
Wriggle Nightbug
Belonging to the firefly species, Wriggle Nightbug is an insect. She has the ability to control others of her kind. She is well known to attack others who question her significance and importance in the realm. Because she is a firefly, humans are not likely to kill her. Wriggle has a fiery personality and gets angry very quickly and easily. She hates insecticide because of its effects on the insect population of Gensokou. Wriggle was in charge of a delivery service for some time, but has since stopped working. Being quite powerful, Wriggle possesses the ability to control other insects and manipulate them freely. Her physical appearance is described as having bug like antennae and teal eyes.
Shizuha Aki
Shizuha can control the changing of leaves in Autumn, because of this ability she is called the Autumn goddess. Making the leaves in Gensokyou change into their autumn colours gives Shizuha a sense of superiority over others. She believes that there is nothing as beautiful as the autumn leave colours. Shihuza has beautiful yellow/orange eyes and is always portrayed with short blonde hair. Her first appearance was in Mountain of Faith.
Erin Yagokoro
Erin is one of the main antagonists in the Imperishable Night. She is considered to be a medical genius by the inhabitants of Gensokyou. She was fundamental in the establishment of the Lunar Society along with some other characters. Currently living in exile in Gensokyou, she is originally an inhabitant of the moon. Erin is a very guarded character, she has many enigmas surrounding her and is not quick to speak about these aspects of her personality. She often comes across as aloof because of her very high intelligence. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly and will easily tell someone exactly what she thinks of them.
Komachi Onazuko
Komachi Onazuko has the ability to manipulate distance and uses her powers quite often. She is considered a bit lazy by some other inhabitants of the realm. Komachi is a shinagami, because of this, she can control departed spirits. She controls spirits using the large Scythe that she carries with her at all times. Her job is to ferry the departed souls to the Higan or afterlife. All souls much cross the Sanzu river, for that she uses a special boat that she calls the Titanic. The boat was provided to her by hell in order to carry her duties out.
Koishi Komeiji Anime Dakimakura Pillow
Being a member of the hated satori species, Koishi is used to be disliked by the other characters. In an attempt to get rid of her mind reading abilities, she closed her third eye.
